Volunteer for Staten Island Trail Maintenance

As you know many of our recreational activities make use of trails that are maintained by volunteers. In particular help is needed to maintain trails on Staten Island. If you are able to help with trail maintenance it would be greatly appreciated. Don't worry, if you have no experience. You will receive an orientation session on how to keep trails in good condition. You will also be given a manual on trail maintenance. It will explain the basics of clearing overgrowth, how to control erosion, how to mark trails, and other related subjects. You will be assigned responsibility for a 2-3 mile section of trail. It will be necessary to visit the section 2-3 times a year.

If you would like to help or have further questions call Bettye and Steve Soffer 718.720.1593 between 7 and 9PM.

Past Schedules

Previous schedules are available at this site. Visitors can get an idea of the range of activities we offer by reviewing these schedules. If you are satisfied the club offers the activities you are seeking then please join us.

The club policy is not to post the current schedule on our web site except as part of a campaign to promote public awareness of the Urban Trail Conference. From time to time we distribute printed copies of the schedule at various outdoor events and at retail outlets such as EMS. This is likewise done so that people who are interested in walking and hiking in the metro area can learn about our organization.

The best way to get the current schedule is to join the club. A printed copy will then be mailed to you. A new schedule is published every two months. Remember the club is made possible by the financial support and volunteer services of its members. Accordingly it is operated exclusively for the benefit of the members.

First Event

As a nonmember you may be able to attend one event for free. If you have a printed schedule check to see whether the "first time is free" offer applies to the activity you are interested in. After the first event we request $3 activity dues for each activity you participate in. Alternatively you can become a member ($10 per year). As a member you can participate in all events at no extra charge. You will receive a complete printed schedule by mail.

Get an Urban Trail Conference Hat or Visor

Many members asked for a club hat and so we responded with a distinctive cap. Then some members said, "I would like a brim to shade my eyes, but I really don't want a hat on my head." And so we purchased a limited quantity of visors. We're making them available for $10 each. That is below our cost even before shipping is added.

The visor is an attractive beige color. The words Urban Trails are easily recognized. They are part of the web site address: www.urbantrails.org, which has been neatly embroidered on the forehead shield. Below it are the words Hiking Club. It is a high quality product with a comfortable headband and a velcro strap in the back to allow adjustment to your precise needs.

The hats are still available, at the regular price of $10. The introductory price has expired, however, we are offering both the hat and and the visor for a package price of $15 including shipping.

The hats are high quality, red brushed cotton with a smartly arched bill to protect the eyes and face from the sun. It is embroidered with the club name and web site. These are the same distinctive caps that you see being worn by the leaders, however the emblem has the words Hiking Club instead of Leader. The caps are comfortable, provide protection from the elements and are easy to spot in a crowd. A strap and buckle makes it easy to adjust the fit to your needs. The cap holds its shape well, so you can stuff it in your bag and it will return to shape when you take it out.
