Sun., Feb. 27  -  CENTRAL PARK “THE GATES” Last Day.  6 + miles.  Outdoor extravaganza of 7,500 Gates installed throughout the park by the artists, Jeanne-Claude and Christo.  “View The Gates” in this natural setting as we walk the paths at a steady continuous pace.  Meet at 1:00 PM in the Time Warner Building lobby at 59th St and Columbus Circle.  Bring water, no lunch.  Optional dinner after the walk.  Leader:  Jim Peborde, 718-718-352-0381 before 9 PM.  Free to all.

Wed., Mar. 2  -  ORCHID SHOW IN CONSERVATORY OF NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN.  Grounds too, including forest and waterfall.  Take # 4 or “D” train to Bedford Park Blvd then walk east or take # 26 bus, east to Garden Gate on Mosholu Parkway OR take the Harlem Line at Grand Central Terminal at 10:23 AM.  Meet on steps of Library Building (green dome) at 11:00 AM.  Fare:  subway $4., train Srs. $2.50 each way.  Admission to grounds free on Wed., $10. to Orchids Show.  Leader: Pat O’Malley, 212-924-7486.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sat., Mar. 5  -  WAVE HILL.  2 miles, hilly, slow walkers welcome.  Fast walkers please stay with the group.  Trails, museums, gardens, hot houses.  Spectacular views.  Admission free until 12 PM.  Bring lunch or buy at café.  Extra walk in Riverside Park if desired.  Take # 1 subway train to 231st St and Bway, transfer to Bx7 Bus to W. 252nd St. OR Metro North to Riverdale Station, free shuttle to wave hill, walk west on 249th St.  Meet at 11:00 AM inside main gate of Wave Hill on W 249th St.  Fare:  $2.00 on NYC transportation, Seniors ½ price unless price change by the time of this walk.  Leader:  Arthur Pierson, 845-462-4654, eves. before 10 PM –apierson@localnet.com.  Walk continues in rain or snow.  We can remain in indoor locations.  Joint with NY Hiking Club.  Free for first time participants.

Mon., Mar. 7  - PEPSICO COMPANY SCULPTURE GARDEN and GROUNDS.  4 miles.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet at Grand Central Terminal Information Booth to take 9:48 AM train to White Plains, then W12 bus at 10:30.  Fare:  $6/$4. plus .85¢ each way.  Exact change for bus fares.  Leader:  Pat O’Malley, 212-924-7486. Wed., Mar 9  -  LAMONT PRESERVE.  6 miles.  Easy with some hills.  We’ll explore some new trails on Lamont Boy Scout Camp (weekdays only allowed to public!).  Bring lunch/hot drink.  Dress warmly.  Hiking Boots Recommended.  Snow doesn’t cancel, ice or blizzard do!   NO SMOKING ON HIKE.  Take A train to 175th St., GWBBT and meet at Red & Tan ticket window to take 11:10 AM C9 bus, Rte. 9W to Boy Scout Camp.  Fare:  Approx. $3., seniors less.  Leader:  Rolande Chapeau.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants

Sat., Mar 12  -  SPUYTEN DUYVIL SHOREFRONT PARK/RIVERDALE PK. 6-7 miles, moderate hike, some ups and downs.  We’ll do the trails in Suyten Duyvil and continue through the lovely Riverdale Park.  Bring lunch/hot drink.  NO SMOKING ON HIKE.  Take IRT # 1 train to 231st St and meet at 11:40 AM by token booth.  Fare:  MetroCard.  Leader:  Rolande Chapeau.  Light snow OK, ice cancels!  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sun., Mar. 13  -  ALICE AUSTIN/FORT WADSWORTH.  Easy walking from the ferry, we will pass by the Lighthouse Museum promenade, Alice Austin photography exhibit, park views of the Verrazano Bridge, ending at Fort Wadsworth.  Allow enough transportation time to make the 10:30 AM ferry from Manhattan and meet leaders at the train station in the rear of the ferry terminal.  Photo ID may be required at Fort Wadsworth.  Bring lunch and water.  Fare:  2 Metrocard trips.  Leaders:  Bettye and Steve Soffer, 718-720-1593, call between 7-9 PM.  Free for first time participants.

Sun., Mar. 13  -  WALK THROUGH RIVERSIDE PARK to ROERICH MUSEUM.  2.5 miles.  Meet at 12 noon for a brisk walk ending at a small, private, fascinating museum on 107th St.  Meeting place is 59th Street and Broadway, NW corner.  Use A, B, C, D, 1 or 9 trains.  NO lunch stop – carry munchies and water.  Please call Thurs. or Fri. between 6-8 PM to confirm.  Leaders:  Marty and Judy Mahler, 718-692-2854.  NO GO in ice or heavy snow.  Service fee $3. non-members.

Wed., Mar. 16  -  SIGNS of SPRING/HARLEM MEER/CONSERVATORY GARDENS.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet at 110th St and Central Park west at 11:30 AM.  Leader:  Pat O’Malley, 212-924-7486.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sat., Mar. 19  -  BROOKLYN MUSEUM VISIT and BOTANIC GARDEN.  Walk 2 miles.  Marilyn Monroe photographs viewed in museum.  Garden is free till noon on Sat.  Museum suggested contribution $8. adults, $4. Seniors.  That usually means pay what you want.  Take #2 subway train to Eastern Parkway–Brooklyn Museum Station and meet 11:30 AM at Washington Ave. onto entrance to the garden.  From subway entrance walk around the museum to Washington Ave., behind the museum.  Leader: Arthur Pierson, 845-462-4654, eves. before 10 PM –apierson@localnet.com.  Walk continues in rain or snow, we can remain in indoor locations. Sun., Mar. 20  -  HIGHBRIDGE WATER TOWER/HIGHBRIDGE RECREATION CENTER.  Meet at the Center, 174th St/Amsterdam Ave to explore the Highbridge Water Tower, a vestige of NYC’s first public water system.  Spectacular Harlem River views and a 360-degree panorama await you.  Bring lunch/water.  Take A/C train to 168th St Washington Hts Stop and walk to meet with the P. Rangers at 11 AM.  Also M101 Bus.  We’ll take a hike through the park and continue along the Harlem River.  Possible dinner at the Floridita.  Leader:  Rolande Chapeau.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Wed., Mar. 23  -  The JAMES A. McFAUL ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER.  Less than 5 miles, this 81-acre new oasis is easy to walk on.  We’ll do a circular viewing 20,000 daffodils, a Nature Ctr. with indoor and outdoors animal’s displays, pond, rhododendron garden, beautiful trees and shrubs and nature trail in the forest.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet in PABT by the White Statue Commuters to take the 10:50 AM NJ Transit bus # 164 to Wortendyke (last stop).  Fare:  $3.80 seniors R/T, more for others.  Leaders:  Pat O’Malley, 212-924-7486 and Rolande Chapeau.  Non-members pay one day dues $3. Thu., Mar. 24  -  SAMPLE STATEN ISLAND.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet in waiting room of Staten Island Ferry (Manhattan side) to take 10:00 AM ferry, then S74 bus to Rockland Rd.  Forest walk through Egbertville Ravine then Uphill through streets past Lighthouse and F.L. Wright House.  Visit the Tibetan Museum.  Continue downhill to Richmond Town.  Fare:  admission $5./$4.  Leader:  Pat O’Malley, 212-924-7486.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sat., Mar. 26  -  YONKERS HIKE VIA THE PUTNAM TRAIL.  About 7 miles, moderate steady pace, easy trail but several staircases up, and a few steep ups/downs.  We’ll walk to Tibbetts Brook Park on the Putnam Trail and then through the Park Hill section of Yonkers on our way back to the Bx9 NYC bus with an optional late lunch/early dinner at the best chicken rotisserie restaurant in NYC.  Take the #1/#9 subway to 242nd Street/Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx (sit in first car, and go right at token booth and right down steps).  Meet 11:00 AM at 242nd St & Broadway.  Bring lunch/warm drink.  Heavy rain, snow, and ice cancel!  Trail can be muddy so you may want to wear hiking boots.  Leaders: Jim Peborde, 718-352-0381 before 9 PM, and Helen Mangione-Yee (Outdoors Club).  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sat., Mar. 26  -  JAMAICA BAY WILDLIFE PRESERVE and Beyond.  8 miles, easy.  Not a circular.  Walk around preserve and then on to Rockaway Beach to Fort Tilden.  Hike ends at Rockaway Park.  Comfortable shoes and layered clothes.  Can be very cold and windy.  Rain cancels.  Bring lunch and water.  Take A train toward Rockaway Park, NOT Lefferts Blvd. to Broad Channel Stop.  Meet at 10:00 AM at train station near token booth.  The 9:00 AM Bus Q53 at Woodside 61st St is preferable.  Leader:  Judy Levine.  For details call 718-482-9659 weekdays bet. 9-11 PM.  Free for first time participants.

Sun., Mar. 27  -  TIBBETTS BROOK PARK.  Approx. 4 miles.  We will walk on the Old Putnam Division RR right-of-way.  Take # 1 subway to last stop and meet at 242nd St and Broadway park side at 1:00 PM.  Leader:  George Glatz, 212-533-9457, call bet. 7 AM-8 AM.  Joint hike with other clubs.

Sun., Mar. 27  -  TRAIL VIEW STATE PARK from Bethpage to Jericho Turnpike.  Flat hike, 7-8 mile hike on flat terrain, moderate pace.  We’ll hike through Bethpage State Park trails.  After lunch continue on through the White Trail to take N79 bus back to Hicksville. Bring lunch/hot drink.  Dress warmly.  Snow, wear your Boots!  Blizzard cancels!  NO SMOKING ON HIKE.  From PENN Station take the LIRR on the lower level to Bethpage at 9:15 AM, from Flatbush at 9:15  (change at Jamaica) and from Jamaica at 9:36, arriving at 10:07 (TIMES CHANGE, CHECK SCHEDULE.).  Fare:  O/W $6., seniors $4:25.  MetroCard for bus.  Leader:  Rolande Chapeau.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Tue., Mar. 29  -  PROSPECT PARK/BOTANICAL GARDEN.  3 to 4 miles on various terrains.  Take F train to the 7th Ave Stop (be in first car) and meet at 12 Noon on the bench front of Prospect Park West and Ninth Street.  Bring lunch/snack/water, and comfortable shoes.  Leader:  Edith Goren, 718-622-4421.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Wed., Mar. 30  -  ROCKLAND LAKE to NYACK.  6-8 miles, first around the lake then on the Shore Path and return from Nyack.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet at ticket window at Port Authority Bus Terminal at 10:00 AM for the 10:15 Coach Bus to Rockland Lake.  Fare:  $6.50/$3.50 one way.  Leader:  Pat O’Malley, 212-924-7486.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sat., Apr. 2  -  WEIR CREEK PARK/FORT SCHUYLER/FERRY POINT PARK.  8 mile flat shore hike, moderate pace.  Road walking and parks.  We’ll explore the way to go to Ferry Point Park.  Begin at Pelham Bay Pk (part near subway), getting down to Weir Creek Park, down to Fort Schuyler – visit to museum (free).  We continue through the Indian Path (vistas and varieties of water birds), and on to F. Point Pk.  Return with the Q44 either to Queens or Subway # 6.  Bring lunch/water.  Take # 6 train to Pelham Bay Park, last stop and meet at token booth at 10:00 AM.  Fare:  MetroCard.  Leader:  Rolande Chapeau.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sat., Apr. 2  -  NEW YORK BAY.  We will walk along the bay under the Verrazano Bridge.  Your choice of 3 or 5 miles.  Bring lunch and water.  We finish with optional snack in Bay Ridge.  We meet outside Bay Parkway Station, at the Dunkin Donuts around the corner on Bay Parkway.  Use D or M train.  Phone between 6-8 for meeting time.  Leaders:  Judy and Marty Mahler, 718/692-2854.  Service fee $3. non-members.

Sat., Apr. 2  -  RIVERSIDE WALK.  3.5 miles walk along the Hudson River Path until 50th St.  Wear comfortable clothing.  Stop for late lunch, until 4 PM, at Mexican Restaurant if you wish.  Take M5 bus to 120th St, OR #1 or 9 subway to 116th St., walk West and meet 12 Noon at W. 120th St and Riverside Drive, parkside.  Leader: Arthur Pierson, 845-462-4654, eves. before 10 PM – apierson@localnet.com.  Walk continues in rain, we can remain in indoor locations.  Joint with NY Hiking Club.  Free for first time participants.

Sun., Apr. 3  -  QUEENS GREENBELT.  7-8 mostly flat miles through four parks, crossing very few streets.  We’ll walk through Kissena Park Corridor, Kissena Park, Cunningham Park and Alley Pond Park.  Taking the Tulip Tree Trail, where we can genuflect before the oldest trees in the city, we’ll reach the end of the hike at Oakland Lake.  Bring lunch/water.  Rain cancels.  Take No. 7 train to Main St., Flushing.  Meet 11:00 AM at northwest corner of Main St. and Roosevelt Ave. under the clock.  Fare:  MetroCard roundtrip.  Leader:  Bob Aronson, 212-255-6884.  Joint hike with Outdoors Club and Shore Walkers.

Tue., Apr. 5  -  BLUE HERON PARK and NATURE CENTER.  2 miles, can be extended along shore to Great Kills Park.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet in waiting room of Ferry Terminal to take 11:30 AM ferry to Staten Island, then S78 bus to Poillon Ave.  Leader:  Pat O’Malley, 212-924-7486.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sat., Apr. 9  -  MEMORIAL WALK FOR DINA TRITSCH – FORT TRYON PARK, DOWN to the LITTLE RED LIGHTHOUSE and along the HUDSON RIVER to PIER I (68th St) and perhaps beyond.  1-6 + miles with drop off points.  Bring lunch and water.  Take “A” train to 190th St then elevator to Margaret Corwin Circle and meet at park entrance at 11:00 AM.  (RAIN DATE 4/10 on Sun.).  Leaders:  Jim Peborde, (718) 352-0381, and Pat O’Malley, (212) 924-7486, call before 10:00 PM.  Joint hike.  Free for first time participants.

Sun., Apr. 10  -  STATE LINE to NYACK VIA the PIER at PIERMONT.  C + hike of approx. 8 miles.  Take A train to 175th St Station and meet at George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal near ticket booths upper level at 10:15 AM to take 10:40 bus.   Bring food and water.  Fare:  $9.40 R/T, seniors $4.70 R/T.  Leader:  George Glatz, 212-533-9457 bet. 7 AM-8 AM.  Joint hike with other clubs.

Sun., Apr. 10  -  EAST RIVER WALK.  5 miles, moderate steady pace.  We will observe an amazing flower and fish displays including tropical birds, parrots and turtles.  We will walk along the river and visit some interesting sights along the way and end up at South Street Seaport. Bring lunch and snack.  Take Lexington Ave local train # 6 to 34th Street and transfer to cross-town bus to meet at Rusk Institute, 400 E 34th St and 1st Ave at 12:45 PM.  Leaders:  Sam and Esther Dorfman.  ,Rain cancels.  Non-members pay one day dues $3., free for first time participants.  Joint Hike.

Sat., Apr. 16  -  CENTRAL PARK – BIRD WATCHING for BEGINNERS.  Moderate, 6 + miles, ups and downs.  All skill levels welcome.  Bring binoculars / field guides / lunch / water.  Meet at 9:00 AM at the Loeb Boat House, a short walk from the Bethesda Fountain – Enter park at 72nd St.  Leader:  Jim Peborde, 718-352-0381.  Call before 10:00 PM.  Rain cancels.  Joint hike.  Free for first time participants

Sun., Apr. 17  -  LONG PATH.  A short hike on the Long Path.  3 to 4 miles, easy at a slow pace.  We will hike from Closter Dock Road to State Line Lookout.  Easy hike overlooking the Hudson.  Bring lunch and water.  Take Ind. Wed., Apr. 20  -  BRANCH BROOK PARK, CHERRY BLOSSOMS.  4 miles.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet at 9th St and 6th Ave (entrance to PATH) at 11:00 AM to take PATH train to Newark then Newark subway.  Fares:  $1.50/$1.10.  Leader:  Pat O’Malley, 212-924-7486.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Wed., Apr. 20  -  CENTRAL PARK WEST WALKING TOUR and CONCERT.  City walk.  Roam through the park from Columbus Circle to 81st Street and see the buildings on Central Park West including the Dakota Apartments.  Join us for lunch at a local Chinese restaurant or bring your own.  There will be a free Chamber Orchestra concert at Alice Tully Hall at 1:00 PM.  After the concert see an exhibit at the library and/or walk further back to Columbus Circle.  Take #1/9 to 59th Street train station.  Meet leaders at the park entrance at 10:00 AM.  Heavy rain cancels.  Leaders:  Bettye and Steve Soffer, 718-720-1593 between 7 PM and 9 PM.  Free for first time participants.

Wed., Apr. 20  -  BRONX ZOO.  2 to 3 miles or more.  Take #2 or #5 train to West Farms Sq. E Tremont Av. Station, walk north and meet at zoo entrance at 12 Noon.  Bring lunch/snack/water, and sturdy shoes.  Leader:  Edith Goren, 718-622-4421.

Sat., Apr. 23  - ROCKEFELLER STATE PARK PRESERVE.  8 miles.  A moderate all day hike with some hills.  No drop off point.  Hike along the Greenrock Property, passing by the Union Church to visit the Fergusons Lake, and on through Equestrian trail to Pleasantville.  Very scenic.  Bring lunch/water.  NO SMOKING ON HIKE.  Take the Hudson Line local train from GCT (42nd St.) to Philipse Manor at 9:20 AM.  OR from Marble Hill (225th St. Sta., near subway #1) at 9:40, train arrives at 10:12.  Fare:  buy one way trip $5.50, seniors $3.75.  Leader: Rolande Chapeau.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sun., Apr. 24  -  BLOSSOMING ROMANCE SINGLES WALK/SILVER LAKE PARK.  The flowers are blooming, love is in the air—it must be springtime.  Adult singles are invited to come out for a walk and perhaps meet that special someone.  Meet the P. Rangers at 1:00 PM.  Bring lunch/water.  Take any train to Ferry Terminal (Manhattan side) and meet inside for 11:30 AM ferry departure!  Then board the S61 bus to Forest Ave/Victory Blvd.  Fare:  MetroCard.  Leader:  Rolande Chapeau.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Sat., Apr. 30  -  TRENTON, N. J.  About 7-8 miles, moderate steady pace, a few ups/downs.  Come and see the historic sights and the wonderful architecture in Trenton on our way to Cadwalader Park.  We’ll return on the Delaware and Raritan Canal path.  Drop off point (about 4 miles) after Park.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet 8:40 AM at NJ Transit (new building/7th Avenue) ticket windows in Penn Station (34th St.) to take NJ Transit Northeast Corridor Line train (arrives about 10:40 AM).  Fare:  about $16. round trip.  HEAVY RAIN CANCELS!  Leaders:  Pat O’Malley, 212 924-7486, and Helen Mangione-Yee (Outdoors Club).  Joint with Outdoors Club.  Non-members:  $3.

Sat., Apr. 30  -  CENTRAL PARK HALF CIRCLE.  Walk North on West Side of Park, around the Meer to Ranger Station.  Have lunch there.  Bring lunch and beverage.  Then South on East Side of the park to the Conservatory Garden, beyond if desired.  Take #1 or 9 subway to 79th St, then walk to the park, or M10 bus and meet 12 Noon at Central Park West at 81st St., North of park vehicle entrance at pedestrian entrance.  Leader: Arthur Pierson, 845-462-4654, eves. before 10 PM –apierson@localnet.com.  Walk continues in rain, we can remain in indoor locations.  Joint with NY Hiking Club.  Free for first time participants.

Sun., May 1  -  PEPSICO, Purchase.  5 to 6 miles walk.  Blossoms time!  A circular easy flat walk through Pepsico to explore Spring flowers, plants and gorgeous trees, a lake and statues.  We may continue through the SUNY grounds.  Drop off point available.  Bring lunch/water.  NO SMOKING ON WALK.  Board the Harlem Line Exp. train to White Plains at 9:48 AM OR the local from Fordham at 9:42, arriv. 10:22 (TIMES CHANGE, CHECK SCHEDULE).  Then a short W12 bus ride at 11:00.  Fare:  buy O/W ticket train and a BeeLine bus ticket transfer together to save.  Train $5., seniors $3.25, bus .85¢ (BRING EXACT BILL AND COINS $1.70/.85¢ FOR WAY BACK).  Leader:  Rolande Chapeau.  Non-members pay one day dues $3.  Free for first time participants.

Fri., May 6  -  BAYARD CUTTING ARBORETUM.  5 miles.  Walk in wood, around lawns and along shore of Connetquot River.  Bring lunch/water.  Meet at Penn station lower level, near ticket windows to take 11:24 AM train to Great River.  Fare:  RT $26./Srs. $19.
